Subaru's flagship model, the Legacy, debuted in 1990 to the surprise of many who had become accustomed to the brand's less conventional offerings. The Legacy was decidely more mainstream, removing the spare tire from the engine compartment and introducing a quieter, more powerful boxer engine dubbed the Subaru EJ. The Legacy was also the only car in it's class at the time to offer AWD and ABS earning it praise from Autoguide.
In 1991, the U.S. recieved its' first turbo-charged variant in the Legacy Sport Sedan, followed closely by the Touring Wagon in 1992. In 1995, the Legacy gave birth to the Outback, a Legacy Wagon with increased ground clearance and more rugged body styling. In 1996, Subaru decided that All-Wheel Drive would come standard.
The Legacy gained a 3.0 Flat-6 engine option and daytime running lights in 2000 and met California's Emission requirements and a gained cabin air filter a year later. 2003 brought a new redesigned exterior with improvements to the chassis and a new turbocharger. Reserving the wagon body style exclusively for the Outback, the Legacy continued on as a sedan only in 2007. Since then, the Subaru Legacy has continued to innovate in its' class, reestablishing Subaru's dedication to Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and introducing new technologies like the Eyesight Driver Assist systems.
