One of the first vehicles considered a Crossover SUV, the Forester reached US shores in 1998. Falling somewhere between a car and a SUV, the Forester sought to unite on-road performance with off-road capability. In fact, the early Foresters were based on the Impreza platform while using the 2.5L engine from the Outback and a standard All-Wheel Drive system.
The early Foresters only came in two trim levels (L & S) but still offered an impressive range of features and options including, but not limited to, fog lights, tilt steering, trailer harness connector, heated front seats and keyless entry. It also featured a rubber timing belt which needed changing approximately every 105,000 miles.
In 2003, the Forester XT was released. Featuring a 2.5L boxer engine with the same turbocharger as the WRX, the XT increased the horsepower from 173 to 224. Starting in 2008, the crossover was certified as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle was additionally equipped with such features as Incline Start Assist and an auxiliary audio jack. Since then, the Forester has continued to improve inside and out and 2014 brings a completely redesigned Forester, including improves to fuel economy and the AWD system.
